Over the past few years, I have found that cake smash sessions seem to be stressful for parents.  Don't let it.  Here are a few things we should cover before our session together:

1.  Decorations.

When I first started, I was buying individual decorations for each session and then parents were bringing their own from their parties to use and a lot of the supplies I was buying were never getting used.  So, before our session, if you don't have any party decorations that you can bring or want to include, just shoot me a message.  Let me know.  I will happily supply and personalize your entire setup for an additional $60, but I must know at booking so that I can be completely prepared.  If you plan on bringing your own for a more personal experience, I will still need to know the theme/colors to better prepare beforehand.

2.  Cake.

I do not supply the cake, due to allergy possibilities. However, don't even stress over it.  It will (hopefully) be completely destroyed within a matter of minutes.  You can get a small cake from Walmart, a local bakery or bake one yourself.  It can be simple and solid while, or decorative. The main suggestions I have are to make sure it's not cold from being in a refrigerator and white cake looks way better than chocolate when it's mushed... if you get my drift. ;)
I do suggest whipped icing because they're more likely to touch it and also fondant can make it harder to swallow and may cause choking.
It's not a bad idea to let him/her have a small taste of cake a little before our session so it won't be a complete shock for them at our session and when you do, let them have it on their hands too. Hopefully, familiarity helps our session go a little smoother.

3.  Drink.

Bring a sippy cup of his/her favorite drink.  It's hard to eat cake without a sip or two here and there.

4.  Bathtub.

After the cake smash, we usually finish in the washtub.  I fill it with warm water and bubbles made from baby soap.  A lot of babies love to splash around and play, which makes for more cute photos, but it also makes for an easy and fun clean up for them.

5.  Outfits.

At the start of our session, we will try to get a few portraits without his/her cake or tub.  This doesn't have to be his/her birthday outfit.  You can bring a favorite outfit and change him/her before the cake.  As far as what to wear for the cake smash, I just suggest something that covers his/her diaper.  Tutus, headband and a diaper cover are cute for girls.  Cute pants/shorts, diaper cover and suspenders are cute for boys.  But you don't always have to go with those! You can be creative, if you'd like! Regardless, they're going to be ADORABLE!

6.  The Warning.

He/she will probably cry at some point.  There is a lot of running and chasing that usually goes on, along with dancing, singing and acting like we're crazy to attempt getting them to smile.  It may also seem like I'm trying to rush with these, but as you know, their attention span is only so long and once they're done with our craziness, it's hard to get them back.  I promise, chances are, I have all day.  I always make sure I have plenty of time and then some for each session that I do.  It's okay.  Our goal is to celebrate their life and try to let them have fun.  I mean, if I could smash and eat cake and then splash around in a bath while singing my favorite songs without being judged, I know I'd have fun doing it! Lol!  For real though, they're only one once! Let's celebrate and create memories!

See you soon!
And thank you for choosing me to celebrate with you!
